Celebrating Pride: Flags

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

Hello again everyone!

On behalf of Project Bravery, Happy PRIDE.

As we get further into the month of June, we see more events and PRIDE visibility. Social media, merchandise and posters are all carrying something in common, PRIDE flags and rainbow colors.

Last week we introduced and highlighted the origins of PRIDE celebrations. We invite you to continue the conversation and understanding with the origins of the PRIDE flags we see today.

The first rainbow flag was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. It was raised in San Francisco's United Nations Plaza, June 25th, 1978 at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Parade. A fragment of this flag is displayed through the GLBT Historical Society. https://www.glbthistory.org/rainbow-flag

The rainbow flag originally consisted of 8 colors. In 1979, the flag was recreated with the traditional 6 colors we see today. As we evolve to understand the importance of a more inclusive and represented society, the LGBTQIA2S+ community continues to use PRIDE flags. There are more than 32 flags that assist in connecting the visibility of Allies to Ze's... https://www.marieclaire.com/.../lgbt-pride-flags-guide/

In 2018, the Progress PRIDE Flag was developed by Portland artist Daniel Quasar. The Progress PRIDE Flag represents and celebrates the diversity of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. "The flag goes beyond the rainbow -- the color white added represents lives lost to HIV and AIDS -- pink and blue for the transgender community -- and black and brown for the people of color who helped spearhead the pride movement in the face of violence and persecution." https://www.kgw.com/.../283-1c03133a-1acc-45d3-b64b...

We invite you to join us as we carry on the tradition of flying out flags and gathering to promote unity and awareness. Come by and paint a rock at the Bravery booth during the Olalla Center Open House and Garage Sale Event on Friday, June 17th from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Olalla Center in Toledo. Share the summer program with LGBTQIA2S+ youth ages 14-18. Join us at Lincoln City PRIDE June 25th, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center.
