Celebrating Pride: History and Origins

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

Hello everyone! On behalf of Project Bravery, Happy Pride! Bravery will be posting on the Olalla blog every week this month, highlighting different aspects of Pride and why this month is so important to us and the community. We will also be promoting Pride-related events that will be happening all across Lincoln County as well as events Bravery will be hosting.

History and Origins:

We wanted to start this series of posts by highlighting the origins of Pride and how this celebration came to be. While most are aware about the riots at Stonewall and how the anniversary of this event inspired the first Pride marches, these marches and even the events at Stonewall would not have been possible without the groundwork laid by activists in the previous decades. The Library of Congress published an article called "The History of Pride: How Activists Fought to Create LGBTQ+ Pride" that provides a detailed account of the events and activism that led to the Pride we know today. You can find this article here or by clicking the following link: https://www.loc.gov/ghe/cascade/index.html?appid=90dcc35abb714a24914c68c9654adb67

Events:

Project Bravery's first event is this Wednesday, June 8th from 3 PM to 5 PM at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. We will be painting rocks pride themed.

Lincoln County has three Pride events:

  • Yachats - Friday, June 10th-11th (yachatspride.org)

  • Lincoln City - Saturday, June 25th from 1 PM - 3 PM at the Lincoln City Cultural Center

  • Newport - September 16th-18th

Closing Thoughts: We hope that you take time this June to celebrate and we would love to hear your stories. Feel free to reach out to us if you have a story or an event you'd like Bravery to share in this month's posts.
