Walden Project Community Activities Update: Exploring, Learning, and Connecting at Olalla Center

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

Greetings, community members! We are excited to share some updates on the diverse and engaging community activities happening at Olalla Center. Our mission is to provide meaningful experiences that bring youth and families together and foster connection. Here's a glimpse of some recent events and groups:

Beach Explorer Club: Our adventurous members have been exploring the beautiful beaches of our Lincoln County, delving into the wonders of the ocean and discovering fascinating beach life. From tide pooling to beach clean-ups, the Beach Explorer Group embraces the spirit of discovery and environmental stewardship. Also, surfing! Riding the waves and embracing the thrill of the ocean, our club has been practicing their skills and enjoying the incredible beauty of the coast. Whether you're a seasoned surfer, or new to the coast, this group offers an exciting and supportive environment for all beach enthusiasts.

Forest Explorer Club: Nature lovers have been hiking through the scenic trails of our community, including Mike Miller Park, Yaquina Head trail, and Forest Hill. These excursions into nature provide opportunities for learning about local flora and fauna, while fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world around us.

Game Night: Our lively Game Night sessions have evolved to include a blend of entertainment and education. In addition to video games and board games, we have introduced engaging STEM activities. Recently, we organized an egg drop challenge where participants built contraptions to protect their eggs from cracking upon impact. It was a thrilling and educational experience, with no eggs harmed in the process!

Survival Swimming: Our Survival Swimming group is hosted by dedicated staff members from the Newport Rec Center. Through comprehensive swimming lessons, participants are empowered with crucial water safety skills and techniques, ensuring a confident and safe experience in the water.

Bright Horizons: Led by the experienced and nurturing Marla Brown, our therapeutic riding center Bright Horizons continues to provide a space for individuals and families to improve physical and emotional well-being. Marla, often referred to as the "horse whisperer," brings her expertise and passion to create a supportive and transformative environment.

LGBTQ+ Bravery Art Club: We are thrilled to announce the launch of the LGBTQ+ Walden Project /Project Bravery collaboration - Thursday Summer Art Club. This inclusive and welcoming space is dedicated to LGBTQ+ youth and youth allies. Through various artistic mediums, participants explore their identities, share experiences, and build a supportive community.

These activities represent just a snapshot of the vibrant programs at the Olalla Center. We are grateful to all of our wonderful staff, volunteers, and community members who make these initiatives possible. If you're interested in volunteering for any of these groups or learning more about upcoming events, please reach out to gaitenh@olallacenter.org. Let's continue to explore, learn, and connect together!

Stay tuned for more updates and exciting opportunities to engage with Walden Project and Olalla Center. Together, we can build a strong and supportive community.

Let’s have a fun summer!
